Six

11.5” tall, 5” wide, 5.25” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

There’s a salvage warehouse that saves these bits of old trim. The ones with a bulls-eye are especially coveted. This one is great because it has so many layers of paint on it. I had worked on this piece for a couple weeks and thought it was done before I found this hummingbird. The green and red in the hummingbird work so well with the green of the “six” ball and the red of the valve handle.

5-Four

10” tall, 8” wide, 5” deep (Freestanding)

I think this is one of my best pieces and I would like to do more like this. More than my other pieces, this really represents assemblage art. It is art comprised of items that are not necessarily art on their own. The rusty door knob and the ice pick handle have had a long life and could probably tell some great stories. The oak wood was once a step of a circular staircase. The number “4” is cut from an I.D. tag that fell off of a semi truck. I found it along the side of the road. The clear marble was the last item added, and I love the shadow it throws onto the number “4”.

Orange Crush

9.75” tall, 7.5” wide, 4” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

Orange Crush is beautiful because each of the orange pieces is a very similar color of orange. Depending on how you’re viewing these pictures, you may see that the bulls-eye trim has a bit of a light blue hue to it, which really sets off the orange pieces. The Tonka tow-truck is a somewhat rare find.

Ted

9.75” tall, 7.5” wide, 4” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

Ted is the name of the Cardinal that lives in our back yard. This piece is named after Ted, the Cardinal. The tonka van from the 1960’s has just the right amount of rust and character. I attached the 8-ball to the cherub because it fit perfectly in his hand. I don’t know what the cherub was before I found him. He was not attached to anything and whatever was in his hand had broken off, long ago. The glossy piece of wood with the colored stripes was pulled from an old croquet set that was apparently hand-made. I found Ted on the floor of a garage at an estate sale. He has a perfectly non-plussed look on his face.

It’s the Plumber, I’ve Come to Fix the Sink!

10.75” tall, 10.75” wide, 5.5” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

“It’s the Plumber, I’ve Come to Fix the Sink!” is a cartoon sketch from the old PBS show “Electric Company”. Its about a plumber, a parrot, and an old woman. Check out this link to the cartoon The Electric Company PBS It's the Plumber (youtube.com). The blue Tonka Van reminds me of a van that belonged to a Plumber in our Neighborhood.

Side Job

10.75” tall, 10.75” wide, 5.5” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

I think “Side Job” is the perfect name for this sculpture. The old Tonka van looks like one that a carpenter would have just to do side jobs. It would have a great set of old tools inside. Just the right tools for just about any job. The base of this piece is made from an old swivel seat stool. The bull’s eye has a particularly ugly color painted on it. I can’t imagine it in a house, but it goes well will the orange color of the van and the wooden handle screw driver.

M is for Monkey

11” tall, 9.25” wide, 4.5” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

M is for Monkey is one of my wife’s favorites. The colors of the monkey blend very well with the various colors of years-old paint on the bulls-eye trim. This one is very simple but the monkey’s eyes contain a lot of expression and the “M” block is a bit of a rare find.

Gearhead

21” tall, 6.5” wide, 6.5” deep (Wall Hanging)

This ceramic rhinoceros has been in my junk collection for a long time. He was broken into several pieces when I purchased him from an estate sale. I had to purchase a special saw to salvage just his head. His “collar” is the base of an old candle stick holder. The cast iron gear is from an old knife sharpener. The brass gears have been harvested from several old clocks. The base of this sculpture is an old barometer. These were very popular wall decorations in the 70’s. This one came from the garage of the father of my friend. I thought about replacing the bottom dial, but I think by leaving it there, it preserves the idea of what it once was.

The Lady

8.75” tall, 9.25” wide, 7.25” deep (Freestanding )

This lady does not need, nor is she interested in any of the things the world is throwing at her. No newspapers, bosses, bankers, or any Mickey Mouse bullsh*t for that matter. You can draw your own conclusions about what each of the figures represent, but as long as she has the basket of bread on her head and the bottle of wine in her hand, she is fine. The lady was purchased from an estate sale. Her head had already been broken off and glued back on. The paper boy is an old Manoil, hand painted figure from the 1950’s. The small green houses are old Monopoly pieces, back when they were made out of wood. The “boss” is a hand carved and hand painted figure, rescued from being thrown away.

But Can She Play Piano?

7.75” tall, 12.25” wide, 6” deep (Free standing)

If you’re a pianist, you’ll notice that the base below the rhino is made from the piece that houses the pedals of a grand piano. I’ve wanted to create a rhinoceros cyborg for a long time. Collecting just the right pieces was a labor of love. An old General Electric tag from an electric iron adorns the front of the base as if this piece of technology was produced by General Electric.

B-Four

9.5” tall, 5.25” wide, 4.5” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

B-Four has a great color scheme of red and green. The green in each piece has a very similar hue. The cowboy is an original Barclay led figure from the 1930’s which is a somewhat rare find. These figures have a lot of character because of the way they are almost haphazardly painted. You can have a lot of fun looking for these characters on eBay because there are so many different types.

Waiting

20” tall, 5.25” wide, 5.25” deep (Free standing)

I found the carving of Jesus and the hollowed lantern at the same garage sale. The lantern had a broken ceramic angel suspended inside of it. I was told the carving of Jesus was purchased from a street artist in Jamaica. This perfect bird was found at an estate sale, it was dusty and waiting for me to find him. I know instantly I would use him on this piece. He has so much character and looks like he is acting as a protector.

4-Horse-Man

12” tall, 9.25” wide, 4” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

4-Horse-Man was built around this horse which spent a lot of time, probably years, sitting on the dirt floor of an old shed. It is made of bronze but it’s extremely oxidized. It has a ton of character. The wooden box probably held screws or nails for years. The red square is a vibrantly painted trivet. The rope is perfectly aged and worn. The cowboy up top is an original Barclay-Manoil led figure from the 1930’s. Flanking the cowboy are 2 vintage block from The Embossing Company which produced many toys and games embossed in wood in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The cowboy and the blocks are somewhat rare finds. These Barclay-Manoil Led figures have a lot of character because of the way they are almost haphazardly painted.

When Pigs Fly

16.5” tall, 11” wide, 2.5” deep (Wall hanging)

I had a lot of fun putting this piece together. It just sort of happened. The backdrop is made out of cut-offs or scraps from another project (Special DeLuxe). I glued them together and started looking for something red or blue to go with them. I found this wooden, toy airplane in my box of junk and the rest just came together. This little pig is carved out of wood and hand painted. I love the juxtaposition of the bird sitting on top of the Kodak tin, inside a picture frame with nesting below. I was inspired by the work of Jen Hardwick on this project, you can see some of her work at this link Jen Hardwick - NW Artist Connection (weebly.com)

The Key

11.5” tall, 4.25” wide, 5” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

The lines in the wood molding represent the different levels of enlightenment. The wood molding is from a great shop in Chicago called The Rebuilding exchange. They have a ton of cool stuff that they have salvaged from old houses and buildings. This one has some perfect imperfections. The wooden ball seems very old. It’s from an old childrens’ game resembling skee ball. The ball is not attached to the rusty eye bolt that it rests in. So if you needed to, you could place the key in the keyhole.

Evermore

11.5” tall, 8.25” wide, 6.5” deep (Free standing)

I love the sound the bell makes. I believe the bell is the kind you would find on the door of an old general store or mom & pop shop. It has the sound you hear in old movies. The glass door knob has obviously had a lot of use in it’s past life and is still beautiful. The yellowed, vintage dice are a nice accent on the sides. I don’t know much about the bird. I found him at an estate sale and thought he looked very unique. He looks like he knows something we don’t. I really like that this piece is so compact and solid.

Any Fish You Wish

12” tall, 6.25” wide, 9” deep (Freestanding)

This hand carved, fisherman has a devilish look in his eyes. He stands on top of this old croquet ball as if to say “On top of the world, Ma” The fish are hand made and purposefully made to look childish like they’re out of a Dr. Seuss book. The pulley was rescued from an old garage and has the perfect amount of rust. The fishing boat was found at a church rummage sale. It had a ton of dust and grime on it. I left a little bit on there for effect.

Castel Bran

14.5” tall, 9.25” wide, 5” deep (Free standing )

On the bottom of this stoic figure is written “Castel Bran”. I learned that Bran Castle is located in Romania, but I was not able to find any information on this uniquely carved figure. But I did find that the lion is a powerful figure in Romanian art and culture. I think the cast iron lion works well behind him. If lit correctly the shadows on the lion’s face are perfect!

Wing Nut

11.5” tall, 7.5” wide, 7.5” deep (Freestanding)

You might compare the two halves of the croquet ball to our planet. You might then compare the gears seemingly pushing the two halves apart, to large industry. The wing nut is the small piece holding it all together, much like our delicate atmosphere. Or you might see something completely opposite!

Baked

12” tall, 12.5” wide, 3.5” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

“Baked” was fun to put together. I found this little guy at an estate sale on a table full of salt & pepper shakers. He was greasy and dusty, and had no mate. I thought he might have been the mascot for Jay’s potato chips back in the day, but I have not found anything to back this up. I really like his imperfections and his expression. The blue frame is from a broken clock , its blue color brings out the blue accents on the baker’s uniform. The oak fascia is from an old painted table, it is rough, scuffed and stained. I think this drawer is a perfect accent. It’s obviously old and has the perfect amount of patina. This piece just works, it’s simple, it’s fun, and I love looking at it.

Under Pressure

10.25” tall, 7” wide, 7.5” deep (Freestanding)

I can never pass up an old gauge. The black gauge on the bottom was attached to this silver water filter contraption. I had to buy the whole assembly just to get the gauge. It did not occur to me until months later that it resembled a submarine. I also have a collection of old water valve handles. I had to try several before landing on the right one. The piece of silver trim at the top is the frame from a mirror. I felt this might represent the surface of the ocean. The piece of coral at the bottom brings a little bit of balance between organic industrial.

2-six-nine-14

20.5” tall, 8.5” wide, 1.75” deep (Wall Hanging)

2-six-nine-14 was very fun to put together. The children’s blocks are well played-with, so they have some interesting grooves. The foosball men were found at a church rummage sale in Riverside, IL. They are the vintage kind with the chubby cheeks. I painted the blocks and the background so that the foosball men would stand out more. I added the vintage radio knobs and the numbered balls because I felt they brought in some of the character of an old foosball table.

Our Lady of Blessed Illumination

13.5” tall, 10.25” wide, 4” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

This old clock has so much character. I tried to leave as much of the old dust on it as possible. The headlamp is from one of those old flashlights that had a box underneath which holds the batteries. It fit perfectly in the hole left by the broken clock face. The last pieces I added were the white drawer pulls on the sides. I think these really bring the piece together.

Cadilac-ac-ac

14.5” tall, 9.5” wide, 5” deep (Wall hanging)

These gold, cast iron cherubs were part of an old, broken chandelier. The leafy cast iron piece holding the glass door knob is from the same chandelier. The 1938 Cadillac is an old, glass Avon cologne bottle. I had to purchase a hole saw that would cut through glass in order to secure it to the oak shelf. I had a lot of fun putting this one together. I think the spoon handles behind the Cadillac look like a fountain.

Be

9.5” tall, 16.5” wide, 3.75” deep (Wall Hanging or Free Standing)

This is probably my most colorful sculpture. The wood base and frame are constructed with pieces intended for a clock. I found them in a box that was destined for a dumpster. If you look at it sideways, you can see a door without the glass. The colored wooden chips are gently used. They were purchased at a fundraiser benefitting an art/music school for sight and hearing, impaired children. The hand carved zebra has so much character, she carry’s almost the entire weight of the scene. A small portion of that weight going to the mindful seagull, concerned for his mutually monochrome friend.

The Loneliness of Adolescence

10.25” tall, 12” wide, 5.5” deep (Freestanding or wall hanging)

“Come in here Deer Boy, have a cigar, you’re gonna go far” This white statuette was found at an estate sale. The man’s head had been broken off and someone tried to glue it back on. There is still some glue residue on the figure’s shoulder. It took me months to find the right head to replace his. This white ceramic fawn was found at Goodwill. It fit perfectly but I almost broke it, trying to use a dremel tool to carve it off. The stone wall was created using small, flat pebbles found at Michigan City Beach in Indiana. I needed the stone wall in order to have something dark to set off the white statuette. I found the deer antler at an estate sale in a bucket of rusty metal. I think the rusty metal helped give it that gray/brown color. One of my favorite things on this piece are the old wooden casters on the bottom. The brass accents on each side of the box were just loose when I found them, so I don’t know what they were for, but they add a lot of character.
